BIFA Documentation

This page provides links to all the BIFA documentation.

Examples of how the BIFA can be used

This section provides examples of how the BIFA can be used by stakeholders to help plan ITS projects at the Canada-U.S. border.  It will be updated regularly as new examples become available.

NITTEC Regional ITS Architecture
The Buffalo-Niagara Bi-National Regional ITS Architecture was developed by the Niagara International Transportation Technology Coalition (NITTEC).  It includes elements from both sides of the border and defines the linkages between the stakeholders and systems in the region. A comprehensive web site provides access to the complete architecture definition.

Cross-Border ATIS-DMS Project Architecture
The Whatcom Council of Governments (WCOG), in cooperation with border stakeholders in the region, developed a project architecture for their Advanced Traveler Information System – Data Management System project. The project archives data from the northbound advanced traveler information system (ATIS), owned and operated by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), and the southbound ATIS system, owned by the B.C. Ministry of Transportation (BCMOT).  The archive is available to the public on the internet, and provides both selectable and raw data and standardized reports on vehicle counts, queue lengths, wait times, and service rates for passenger vehicles crossing at the two ports of entry between Blaine, Washington and Surrey, British Columbia. The project architecture is available as a PDF document (220 KB) and as a Turbo Architecture file (1 MB).
